ACS Articles on Request
As announced in the January 2006 issue of LiveWire, ACS authors are
now encouraged to share unlimited free access to their articles starting one year
after publication. The ACS Articles on Request initiative was launched in January
through e-mail messages sent to almost 60,000 authors whose ACS articles are
now accessible under the new policy.
ACS Articles on Request expands on the existing policy of allowing up to
50 free electronic PDF downloads (e-prints) of each author’s final published
ACS articles during the first 12 months after publication. Access is permitted
via links that ACS provides to authors, then authors provide to interested colleagues.
Now, the access limitation is removed after 12 months, thereby allowing unlimited
free e-prints via the same author-directed links.
Brian Crawford, Senior Vice President of the ACS Publications Division, says, “We
are very pleased to expand access in this way to research published in ACS journals.
It is fundamental to the ACS mission to support and promote the research enterprise
and to foster communication among its scientists. Providing unrestricted access
via author-directed links 12 months after publication—in addition to the
50 free e-prints currently allowed during the first year of publication—reinforces
that mission.”
If your patrons have questions about how to participate in ACS
Articles on Request, they should contact the ACS Publications Help Desk at journalhelp@acs.org.
In another initiative, unedited versions of peer-reviewed manuscripts funded
entirely or in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that have been
accepted for publication in ACS journals will become publicly available. PubMed
Central will provide free access starting 12 months after publication by the
ACS.
ACS Paragon Plus Environment successfully launched
On February 13, 2006, ACS Publications successfully launched the ACS
Paragon Plus Environment for the Journal
of Chemical Theory and Computation (JCTC). This
new web-based, real-time system for online manuscript submission and peer review
replaces the ACS Paragon System. Implementation of the ACS
Paragon Plus Environment will continue in 2006 for other ACS
journals.
The new system keeps the functionality that authors and reviewers have told
us they value from the ACS Paragon System, while adding new capabilities to
simplify the process and add efficiencies. The ACS
Paragon Plus Environment is powered by ScholarOne® Manuscript Central™, which is used by more
than 1,400 journals worldwide.
Information about the ACS Paragon Plus
Environment can be found at http://pubs.acs.org/paragonplus/auth_rev/index.html.
