The American Chemical Society—Charleston Scholarship

The ACS is proud to support librarians wishing to participate in the Charleston Conference, an annual event attended by nearly 1,000 people. The formal lectures, amplified and augmented by the corridor conversations that arise throughout the conference, are great ways for librarians and vendors alike to gain broader perspectives about the many issues that surround scholarly communications – from practical, business-oriented concerns to lofty ideas that help drive the next generation of products and services offered to and by members of the community.

Application Requirements

DEADLINE: August 15, 2008

Scholarship Amount: $1,500

There are three requirements:

  1. The applicant must submit an essay of between 500 and 1000 words on the topic: “What industry related technology or feature would you like to see in your library, and how would attending the Charleston Conference contribute or bring that vision one step closer to becoming a reality?”
  2. The applicant must submit a copy of his/her CV along with the essay
  3. The applicant must be a library professional or para-professional currently working in a library

Send your essay with your CV to:

Macromolecules Perspectives

In 2006, Macromolecules Editor Timothy Lodge added a new article type, the Perspective. Perspectives were created to convey a sense of what is new and exciting in a particular area and to provide leadership to the community by having experts offer a vision of what is important for the field to advance.

Perspectives are intended to summarize important issues in a field, especially unresolved ones; draw attention to the author's own contributions; and include new results if appropriate. Perspectives are not intended to be a comprehensive review of the field, nor are they intended to be merely a summary of an author's work.

Nano-scientists can share their vision — and they might win $50

ACS Nanotation, the free online community for nano-scientists, announces the NanoVision Image Contest. Each month, a winning image depicting nanoscale science or nanotechnology will be chosen and featured on the website. The researcher who submits it will receive a $50 Visa gift card! The contest is free and open to all registered users.

Images can be submitted online at www.acsnanotation.org/nanovision

Librarians: please pass this news along to the nano-scientists at your institution. Encourage them to sign up and submit an image today!

ES&T's Best Papers Awards

More than 1,200 papers were published in Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T) in 2007 on a wide range of topics. Editor-in-Chief Jerald L. Schnoor, working with the journal's Associate Editors and Editorial Advisory Board, has selected the top papers of 2007 in the categories of Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, and Environmental Technology. These are papers expected to have a significant and long-lasting impact on the field.

The Best Paper Awards are an annual event announced online in February or March of the year after publication. View a summary of the awards and brief articles about them.
