Precipitation of Lead(II) Iodide from Sodium Iodide. The sequence of images on the cover shows 0.2 M aqueous sodium iodide, NaI, solution being added from a buret to 0.1 M aqueous lead(II) nitrate, Pb(NO3)2, solution in a crystallizing dish. The beautiful yellow precipitate is lead(II) iodide, PbI2(s). In their article, Chandrasegaran, Treagust, and Mocerino use this chemical reaction and others to examine how emphasizing multiple levels of representation enhances students’ understandings of the changes occurring during chemical reactions.
