ACS Publications: High Quality, High Impact

How It Was Created

More than One Hundred Years of Chemistry, Presented with Cutting-Edge Technology

Developing the ACS Legacy Archives was an enormous investment in time and resources. It required more than a year to scan all the articles. Following the scanning, a series of exacting manual and computerized checks were implemented to ensure accuracy and the utmost quality. The end result is a research tool that’s tremendous in its breadth, yet easy to search, navigate, and read:

  • High resolution scans (600 dpi for black & white; 400 dpi for color and
    half-tone figures)
  • PDF files that are as easy to read as the original document
  • Full-text searching of the complete Archives enabled via sophisticated character
    recognition software
  • Bibliographic information acquired from CAS, when available, or entered manually to provide maximum accuracy and facilitate linking
  • A range of search options – by citation, author, article name, key word, journal title,
subject, timeframe – allowing users to find what they need with the information they
    have on hand
  • IP-based access, with no need for user IDs or passwords
  • Seamless integration into the ACS website so researchers can search both the Archives and current Web Editions with a single click of the mouse

The Archives has been downloaded to both DVD and magnetic tape for secure long-term storage. In the unlikely event that it proves infeasible for the ACS to maintain the ongoing availability of the PDF archive, the ACS, in consultation with its Library Advisory Group, will make the Archives available through an acceptable depository.

As the use of high-speed internet becomes more widespread internationally, pages from the Archives will be offered at higher resolution levels. The ACS is committed to taking advantage of developing technologies to help researchers fully exploit the wealth of information contained in the Archives.

With the ACS Legacy Archives, your organization has a secure and cost-efficient alternative to storing and retrieving print archives. In addition, authorized users have the flexibility of accessing the Archives whenever they need it and wherever they need it – the library, office, or lab.
