Nominations for Norris Award for 2004

The American Chemical Society Northeastern Section invites nominations for the James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry. Teachers at the high school, undergraduate, and/or graduate level are eligible for the award, which consists of $3,000 and a certificate.

Nominations should focus on the candidate's contributions to and effectiveness in teaching chemistry. The nominee's condensed curriculum vitae, with a list of honors, awards, and publications related to chemical education, should be included. Seconding letters are also an important part of a nomination packet, which should not exceed 30 pages.

Send nomination packets (as hard copy or electronically in Adobe PDF format) to Marilou Cashman, NESACS, 23 Cottage St., Natick, MA 01760; e-mail: MCash0953@aol.com. For more information, see http://www.nesacs.org or contact Frederick D. Greene, (617) 253-1840, e-mail: fdg@mit.edu. Nominations are due before April 16, 2004.

2004 Gassman Distinguished Service Award

The Division of Organic Chemistry solicits nominations for the 2004 Paul G. Gassman Distinguished Service Award. The award aims to recognize outstanding service to the organic chemistry community.

The award consists of $3,000 and a plaque. It is given no more than biennially at the fall executive committee dinner in even-numbered years. The upcoming award presentation will be in Philadelphia, during the 228th ACS national meeting, Aug. 22-26, 2004. Travel expenses to attend the meeting will also be provided.

Nominees must be long-standing members of the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry who through their contributions to the organic chemical community in the U.S. have significantly enhanced the welfare of its members. Contributions to ACS and/or the division, leadership and innovation in the division, and conspicuous service on behalf of organic chemists are appropriate considerations. Nominations should emphasize the nominee's service contributions.

Five copies of the nomination document, supporting materials, and seconding letters (up to five) should be sent to James H. Rigby, Secretary/Treasurer, Division of Organic Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI 48202. The deadline is April 1, 2004.
