It its June 6 open meeting at the ACS Belmont Conference Center in Elkridge, Md., the ACS Board of Directors heard reports from various committees and discussed society business.
The Committee on Professional & Member Relations reported the most recent membership statistics. As of April 30, the total membership of ACS was 155,701, almost 2,000 more than last year at the same time.
Acting under delegated authority and on the recommendation of the ACS Petroleum Research Fund Advisory Board, the Committee on Grants & Awards reported that it voted to approve 168 grants-in-aid totaling $8,578,137.
The Grants & Awards Committee also reviewed the nomination data for the 2004 ACS national awards. The total number of nominations is 925—a 20% increase in the number of nominations from the 2003 awards cycle. The data reflect a 42% increase in the number of women nominees and a 79% increase in the number of nominees from industry.
The ACS Board approved a nomination from the National Historic Chemical Landmarks Committee to designate advances in research on vitamin B at Merck Laboratories in New Jersey as a National Historic Chemical Landmark. The landmark ceremonies will be held next year.
