Headliners Sumio Iijima (left), professor of materials science and engineering, Meijo University, Nagoya, Japan, gave the congress' keynote lecture, which was illustrated by amazing micrographs. Shinji Murai (center), president of the Chemical Society of Japan and director of the Japan Science & Technology Center in Osaka, was chair of the congress. New ACS President E. Ann Nalley (right) was on the Pacifichem organizing committee.

Traditional Hawaiian chanting and dancing were highlights of the Pacifichem opening ceremonies.
