ACS HONORS PUBLIC SERVICE

Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.), Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas), and Raymond L. Orbach, director of the Office of Science at the Department of Energy, were presented with the American Chemical Society Public Service Award at a ceremony held on April 20 at the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.
The awards have been given annually since 1997 to recognize non-ACS members who, according to ACS, have made outstanding contributions to the development of public policy that benefits chemistry and the sciences.
Warner, with 25 years of congressional service, has been a strong proponent of technological developmentespecially roboticsthroughout his tenure, and he is currently involved with several initiatives to improve science and engineering education at all levels.
A member of the House Science Committee and a senior Democrat on the Subcommittee on Research, Johnson has sponsored or supported legislation in a variety of scientific areas, including an amendment to the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research & Development Act.
Orbach is being recognized for his science advocacy and service, as well as the efficient management and increased emphasis on basic research that he brought to DOEs Office of Science when he took over two years ago.
