This year, the NCW theme is "Celebrating Chemistry and Art." Activities will include events at local art museums, tours of chemical companies that specialize in products necessary to produce works of art, displays in local libraries illustrating the papermaking process, and presentations by speakers on art restoration and preservation.

Many events are aimed at young people, with the hopes of catalyzing an interest in the central science. The Washington-Idaho Border Section is conducting chemistry demonstrations at Kamiah, a predominantly Nez Percé tribal school. The section also will produce a "Periodic Table of the Moles," in which Native American mole sculptures will be arranged according to their chemical composition. And for those kids who can't get to the chemistry events, the Savannah Section will bring the chemistry events to them with a nationwide satellite TV broadcast of its video "Chemistry of the Familiar" on the Teltrain show. This event is scheduled for Nov. 8 at 1 PM.

In recognition of the 125th anniversary of ACS, local sections are sponsoring "Celebrating Chemistry--Then and Now," a poster contest for K–12 students. The contestants will illustrate how chemistry has contributed to positive changes in the quality of our lives in the past 125 years. And the ACS Publications Division is joining the celebration: ACS online editions, including C&EN, will be free during NCW. Register at http://pubs.acs.org/ncw starting on Nov. 4
