ETH's New Chemistry Building Opens In Zurich
MICHAEL FREEMANTLE
The chemistry department at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) has moved from a building, parts of which were constructed more than 100 years ago, in the center of Zurich to a gleaming new $300 million building at the institute's Hönggerberg site on the outskirts of the city.

The inauguration of the chemistry building was marked by four days of festivities, including an inaugural symposium titled "Frontiers in Chemistry in a Global Society." More than 9,000 visitors toured the new building, listened to lectures about chemical research at ETH, watched demonstrations, and carried out experiments.
"I do not know of anywhere else where a building of this cost, and so well laid out to meet the needs of chemists, could be produced," remarked Ronald Breslow, chemistry professor at Columbia University, who presented a lecture at the symposium. "It represents an investment in chemistry that is simply not seen in the U.S. at the same level."
The department now joins ETH's departments of biotechnology, biology, and physics, which have been located at Hönggerberg for many years. The institute's departments of materials science, microbiology, and applied biology will move to the site over the next few years.
