U.S. Chemistry Olympiad Team Selected

LOUISA DALTON

Four high school students will travel to Athens to represent the U.S. in the 35th International Chemistry Olympiad from July 5 to 14. Eric Brown of McCallie School in Chattanooga (seventh from right, standing); Frances Hocutt of Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, Calif. (eighth from left, standing); Benjamin Kaduk of Naperville North High School in Illinois (fourth from right, standing); and Wei-han Bobby Liu of Cookeville High School in Tennessee (second from right, standing) were selected out of 20 students who attended an intense chemistry training camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 1–15.

At the camp, the students were drilled in organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry with the help of associate chemistry professor Loretta Dorn of Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kan.; chemistry professor Neal Sumerlin of Lynchburg College in Virginia; and Todd Trout of Lancaster Country Day School in Pennsylvania.

The camp wasn't all study. Without access to television or computers, the students (complete list online) say they relaxed by playing ultimate Frisbee and almost continual card games.

In Athens, the U.S. contingent will compete against teams representing more than 50 countries by taking a theoretical exam and a laboratory practical exam. Sumerlin and Trout will accompany the U.S. team to Greece.
