Jeremy M. Berg, professor of biophysics and biophysical chemistry and director of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, was appointed director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) last week by NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni. Within NIH, NIGMS is the single largest source of funding for chemistry research.

Berg, 45, holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

"NIH and the government are very lucky to have been able to attract Dr. Berg," Zerhouni tells C&EN. "He is an outstanding leader and one of the bright lights of his generation."

For his part, Berg tells C&EN that he is excited to be joining the agency. "NIH has been very good to me and very good to the sort of science that I believe in," he says. "Having a chance to help direct it is a thrill."

In early November, Berg will replace Judith H. Greenberg, who has been acting director of NIGMS since May 2002.
