Newton Urges More Agricultural Research—Condemns Farm Subsidy

Agricultural research and mechanization has freed five out of every six people for other work
Abstract
SKYTOP, PA.-Award of the Industrial Research Institute's 1952 medal for outstanding accomplishment, leadership in, and management of research to Roy C. Newton, vice president in charge of research of Swift & Co., climaxed the three-day annual meeting of the institute here May 5 to 7. A new attendance record was made at Skytop.
In his acceptance address, Dr. Newton emphasized the need for increased research effort in agriculture and food production. This need, he said, arises from the problem of feeding an increasing population without being able to increase greatly the nation's farming acreage.
"The more fundamental studies which provide the basic knowledge of Nature's things, and the laws which govern their behavior, will be the guide to greater production," Dr. Newton declared. "Further improvement in our standard of life can be achieved only by extending our research effort."
