Abstract
It is important for science students to have some basic understanding of the statistical analysis of experimental data. They need to know about random error and how statistics is used to deal with it. More specifically, students should know how to discard data objectively. This is done through multiple analyses of the percent zinc in galvanized nails. Q test, confidence interval, and null hypothesis are discussed.

Introducing Quality Control in the Chemistry Teaching Laboratory Using Control Charts
Benjamin Schazmann , Fiona Regan , Mary Ross , Dermot Diamond and Brett PaullJournal of Chemical Education2009 86 (9), 1085Introducing Quality Control in the Chemistry Teaching Laboratory Using Control Charts
Benjamin Schazmann , Fiona Regan , Mary Ross , Dermot Diamond and Brett PaullJournal of Chemical Education2009 86 (9), 1085Quality control (QC) measures are less prevalent in teaching laboratories than commercial settings possibly owing to a lack of commercial incentives or teaching resources. This article focuses on the use of QC assessment in the analytical techniques of ...

Using Candy Samples To Learn about Sampling Techniques and Statistical Data Evaluation
Larissa S. Canaes , Marcel L. Brancalion , Adriana V. Rossi and Susanne RathJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (8), 1083Using Candy Samples To Learn about Sampling Techniques and Statistical Data Evaluation
Larissa S. Canaes , Marcel L. Brancalion , Adriana V. Rossi and Susanne RathJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (8), 1083A classroom exercise for undergraduate and beginning graduate students that takes about one class period is proposed and discussed. It is an easy, interesting exercise that demonstrates important aspects of sampling techniques (sample amount, particle ...

Using Pooled Data and Data Visualization To Introduce Statistical Concepts in the General Chemistry Laboratory
Robert J. OlsenJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (4), 544Using Pooled Data and Data Visualization To Introduce Statistical Concepts in the General Chemistry Laboratory
Robert J. OlsenJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (4), 544I describe how data pooling and data visualization can be employed in the first-semester general chemistry laboratory to introduce core statistical concepts such as central tendency and dispersion of a data set. The pooled data are plotted as a 1-D ...

A Didactic Experience of Statistical Analysis for the Determination of Glycine in a Nonaqueous Medium Using ANOVA and a Computer Program
M. J. Santos-Delgado and L. Larrea-TarruellaJournal of Chemical Education2004 81 (1), 97A Didactic Experience of Statistical Analysis for the Determination of Glycine in a Nonaqueous Medium Using ANOVA and a Computer Program
M. J. Santos-Delgado and L. Larrea-TarruellaJournal of Chemical Education2004 81 (1), 97This article describes the statistical comparison of two back-titration methods for the determination of glycine in a glacial HAc medium. The titration is carried out using perchloric acid. The glycine quantities obtained were determined by several groups ...

Effect of Sample Size on Sampling Error: An Experiment for Introductory Analytical Chemistry
Joseph E. Vitt and Royce C. EngstromJournal of Chemical Education1999 76 (1), 99Effect of Sample Size on Sampling Error: An Experiment for Introductory Analytical Chemistry
Joseph E. Vitt and Royce C. EngstromJournal of Chemical Education1999 76 (1), 99Despite the importance of sampling in analytical chemistry, it is frequently overlooked in the introductory analytical curriculum. We have developed a laboratory experiment suitable for the introductory analytical course that introduces the principles of ...
