Abstract

This manuscript describes an experimental exercise for the physical chemistry laboratory which incorporates important features of statistical mechanics and the properties of solid state materials. In this experimental laboratory the students measure the temperature dependence of the resistivity of Cu InSb, and a high Tc oxide superconductor. In addition, the students interpret their resistivity measurements in terms of microscopic properties of the system. This experimental exercise has been implemented in the second term physical chemistry laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh, which is taken by both chemistry majors and engineering majors.
