Abstract
This Paper decribes a qualitative analysis scheme for a limited selection of carbohydrates (i.e. some mono- and disaccharides) using a flowchart approach. Procedures, for the preparation of all reagents, the tests and a brief description of the results are detailed. This scheme is adaptable to any existing laboratory course and should be especially amenable to introductory organic chemistry courses.

Manuel João CostaJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (6), 977Identifying and differentiating monosaccharide isomers is an important educational goal in introductory biochemistry courses. However the topic is difficult for many students—in particular, chemistry nonmajors. This paper describes CARBOHYDECK, a card ...

Edward G. SenkbeilJournal of Chemical Education1999 76 (1), 80Students are given a list of carbohydrates and a list of references for carbohydrate analysis. The references contain a variety of well-characterized wet chemistry and instrumental techniques for carbohydrate identification, but the students must develop ...
