Abstract

The complex [PdCl2(bopy-N,O)] (1) is prepared by addition of the 2-benzoylpyridine, NC5H4 - CO - C6H5 (bopy) ligand to a refluxing suspension of PdCl2 (1:1 molar ratio). The bopy ligand is coordinated in a chelate fashion, but the Pd - O=C bond is weak and easily displaced by ligands resulting complexes cis-[PdCl2(bopy-N)(L)] (L = bopy (2), PPh3 (3)) or [NMe4][PdCl3(bopy-N)] (4). One feature that is clearly noticeable in the infrared spectra of all these complexes is the variation of the frequency of the absorption n(CO) appearing at lower values in the chelating situation (ca. 130 cm-1) than when the oxygen atom is not bonded to the metal center. The reason for the decrease in the frequency of the stretching absorption of the C=O bond is that the electron donation of the oxygen atom to the metal center in the chelating situation causes the C=O bond to weaken. Thus, simple infrared spectroscopy can be used to study the changes in the coordination mode of the bopy ligand. Together with the absorption n(CO), the observation of the patterns of the signals n(Pd-Cl) in these complexes provide some interesting structural information.
