Egg-Citing! Isolation of Protoporphyrin IX from Brown Eggshells and Its Detection by Optical Spectroscopy and Chemiluminescence
Michelle L. Dean, Tyson A. Miller, and Christian BrücknerJournal of Chemical Education2011 88 (6), 788-792Egg-Citing! Isolation of Protoporphyrin IX from Brown Eggshells and Its Detection by Optical Spectroscopy and Chemiluminescence
Michelle L. Dean, Tyson A. Miller, and Christian BrücknerJournal of Chemical Education2011 88 (6), 788-792A simple and cost-effective laboratory experiment is described that extracts protoporphyrin IX from brown eggshells. The porphyrin is characterized by UV−vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. A chemiluminescence reaction (peroxyoxalate ester fragmentation) ...

Francisco J. Arnáiz and María R. PedrosaJournal of Chemical Education1999 76 (12), 1687Lead and its more common salts have for a long time been used to perform a number of experiments. In recent years, owing to the importance of minimizing the production of hazardous chemicals, there is a tendency to replace experiments involving toxic ...

Using Large Glass Cylinders To Demonstrate Chemical Reactions
Wobbe de Vos , Kim KostkaJournal of Chemical Education1999 76 (4), 528Using Large Glass Cylinders To Demonstrate Chemical Reactions
Wobbe de Vos , Kim KostkaJournal of Chemical Education1999 76 (4), 528This article describes a simple laboratory experiment that aims at pedagogic as well as aesthetic aspects of chemical reactions. Experiments of this type have a high educational potential as students have the opportunity to observe the actual formation of ...
