Abstract

An experiment which can be used by students of polymer chemistry for the quantification of acetyl or benzoyl groups in functionalyzed polystyrene is presented. It is based on the comparison of IR spectra of acetophenone-polystyrene or benzophenone-polystyrene mixtures with the spectra of functionalyzed polymers. Proton magnetic resonance was used to validate the method of acetyl quantification and 13C NMR to validate the IR method for the quantifcation of polystyrene benzoylation.
