Abstract

An exploration of synthesis of SnI2 and SnI4 teaches the student not only about one of the principal provinces of the chemist, but also provides the opportunity to learn about a variety of laboratory procedures and methodologies. In this project the student has the opportunity to learn about: a) the direct synthesis of compounds from the elements, b) stoichiometry and limiting reagent, c) isolation by recrystallization, d) use of inert atmosphere, e) identification by melting point, gravimetric analysis, powder x-ray diffraction, and NMR spectroscopy, and f) at least one method for determination of relative Lewis acidity. The broad scope of the project makes it ideal for a multi-week project in the introductory course or in an upper-level course such as Inorganic Chemistry. It can also be adapted to more individual learning experiences where, for example, a student might be asked to explore a particular synthesis of SnI4, another might synthesize SnI2, others might pursue methods to analyze the compounds, to convert one to the other, to determine their Lewis acidity, and so on.

    • The Empirical Formula of Silver Sulfide

      Carlos Alexander Trujillo
      Journal of Chemical Education2007 84 (10), 1682

An experiment is described that allows students to experimentally determine an empirical formula for silver sulfide. At elevated temperatures, silver sulfide reacts in air to form silver, silver sulfate, and sulfur dioxide. At higher temperatures (960 °C)...

      Journal of Chemical Education2002 79 (8), 994

In this experiment, students convert a copper oxide salt to copper metal by two chemical methods, one using methane gas in the solid state and one using aluminum metal in an aqueous solution. This method works for both copper(I) oxide and copper(II) ...
