Introducing Scientific Reasoning with the Penny Lab

Abstract

Discovery labs require a thorough knowledge of the experiment. Towards this end, a brief history of the chemistry of the Lincoln Type Penny, tips for instructors, and experimental results for an introductory discovery lab, commonly known as the "Penny Lab," are presented. Considerable emphasis is placed on scientific reasoning as defined in Ronald Giere's Understanding Scientific Reasoning for use in this and other discovery labs. This experiment, only briefly described elsewhere, is excellent for introducing students to a number of topics including scientific research, experimental design, and the determination of density.
