Abstract
Discovery labs require a thorough knowledge of the experiment. Towards this end, a brief history of the chemistry of the Lincoln Type Penny, tips for instructors, and experimental results for an introductory discovery lab, commonly known as the "Penny Lab," are presented. Considerable emphasis is placed on scientific reasoning as defined in Ronald Giere's Understanding Scientific Reasoning for use in this and other discovery labs. This experiment, only briefly described elsewhere, is excellent for introducing students to a number of topics including scientific research, experimental design, and the determination of density.

Definition and Formulation of Scientific Prediction and Its Role in Inquiry-Based Laboratories
Robert F. MauldinJournal of Chemical Education2011 88 (4), 449-451Definition and Formulation of Scientific Prediction and Its Role in Inquiry-Based Laboratories
Robert F. MauldinJournal of Chemical Education2011 88 (4), 449-451The formulation of a scientific prediction by students in college-level laboratories is proposed. This activity will develop the students’ ability to apply abstract concepts via deductive reasoning. For instances in which a hypothesis will be tested by an ...

Data Pooling in a Chemical Kinetics Experiment: The Aquation of a Series of Cobalt(III) Complexes: A Discovery Chemistry Experiment
Lisa P. Nestor , Richard S. Herrick and Kenneth V. MillsJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (8), 1120Data Pooling in a Chemical Kinetics Experiment: The Aquation of a Series of Cobalt(III) Complexes: A Discovery Chemistry Experiment
Lisa P. Nestor , Richard S. Herrick and Kenneth V. MillsJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (8), 1120An experiment in chemical kinetics as part of our Discovery Chemistry curriculum is described. Discovery Chemistry is a pedagogical philosophy that makes the laboratory the key center of learning for students in their first two years of undergraduate ...

Donald J. Wink and Jeong Hye Hwang-ChoeJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (3), 396Pennies and Eggs: Initiation into Inquiry Learning for Preservice Elementary Education Teachers
Donald J. Wink and Jeong Hye Hwang-ChoeJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (3), 396Two labs incorporating the Science Writing Heuristic are described that introduce scientific inquiry in a course for preservice students majoring in elementary education. One lab adapts a previously described discovery learning opportunity involving the ...

The Penny Experiment Revisited: An Illustration of Significant Figures, Accuracy, Precision, and Data Analysis
Joseph BularzikJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (9), 1456The Penny Experiment Revisited: An Illustration of Significant Figures, Accuracy, Precision, and Data Analysis
Joseph BularzikJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (9), 1456Measuring the mass of many pennies has been used as an easy way to generate data for exercises with statistical analysis. In this general chemistry laboratory the densities of pennies are measured by weighting the pennies and using two different methods ...

What's Wrong with Cookbooks? A Reply to Ault

Mark S. Cracolice , Kereen MonteyneJournal of Chemical Education2004 81 (11), 1559The controversy about inquiry labs relative to traditional cookbook verification labs is apparently far from over. Verification labs have long been criticized as leading only to poor learning and poor attitudes regarding science among students doing this ...
