Abstract
An experimental procedure is described to study the acid-basic equilibrium in aqueous solutions of phenolic compounds. The quenching of luminescence of the excited state of Ru(bpy)32+ complex by some phenol derivatives was successfully used to obtain the Stern-Volmer constant at different pH's and then to determine their acid dissociation constant (Ka). This procedure is suitable for an undergraduate physical chemical laboratory where the student get acquainted with fluorescence techniques and the principles of photochemistry as well as electron transfer processes combined with the equilibrium concept.

Judith L. Jenkins and Lawrence E. WelchJournal of Chemical Education2009 86 (5), 613An EDTA complex of terbium(III) was evaluated via phosphorescence spectroscopy in the presence of varying quantities of quencher TEMPOL. Both steady-state excitation via a xenon lamp and pulsed excitation via a nitrogen laser were used to allow the ...

Edward C. Shane , Miranda Price-Everett and Tonya HansonJournal of Chemical Education2000 77 (12), 1617We describe a two-part fluorescence experiment that measures (i) the surface adsorption of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pyrene to Pyrex, quartz, and LDPE surfaces and (ii) the binding of pyrene to natural humic acids (HA). A model for surface ...
