Determination of pKa from Luminescence Quenching Data: An Undergraduate Laboratory Experiment

Abstract

An experimental procedure is described to study the acid-basic equilibrium in aqueous solutions of phenolic compounds. The quenching of luminescence of the excited state of Ru(bpy)32+ complex by some phenol derivatives was successfully used to obtain the Stern-Volmer constant at different pH's and then to determine their acid dissociation constant (Ka). This procedure is suitable for an undergraduate physical chemical laboratory where the student get acquainted with fluorescence techniques and the principles of photochemistry as well as electron transfer processes combined with the equilibrium concept.
