Abstract
The technique of flow injection analysis (FIA) is a common instrumental method used in detecting a variety of chemical and biological agents. This paper describes an undergraduate laboratory that uses FIA to perform a bicinchoninic acid (BCA) colorimetric assay for quantitating protein samples. The method requires less than 2 min per sample injection and gives a response over a broad range of protein concentrations. This method can be used in instrumental analysis labs to illustrate the principles and use of FIA, or as a means for introducing students to common methods employed in the analysis of biological agents.

Christopher J. Nichols, Larry F. HanneJournal of Chemical Education2010 87 (1), 87-90A multidisciplinary experiment has been developed in which students each synthesize a combinatorial library of 48 hydrazones with the aid of a liquid-handling robot. Each product is then subjected to a Kirby−Bauer disk diffusion assay to assess its ...

Manuel E. Minas da Piedade , António C. L. ConceiçãoJournal of Chemical Education2006 83 (12), 1853The use of the gradient chamber flow-injection titration method (GCFIT) to determine acidity constants is illustrated through an experiment involving acetic and benzoic acids. The procedure relies on spectrophotometric detection and on the use of an acid–...

Luiz Antônio Ramos , Kátia Roberta Prieto , Éder Tadeu Gomes Cavalheiro and Carla Cristina Schmitt CavalheiroJournal of Chemical Education2005 82 (12), 1815The use of crude flower extracts is proposed to teach the principles of flow injection procedures. In this experiment a bleaching reaction between hypochlorite and the anthocyanins contained in the flower extracts is examined. The bleaching of the crude ...
