Abstract
Modern digital capacitance meters can be used in the physical chemistry laboratory for dielectric constant experiments, replacing older tube-type instruments. This paper cautions that the type of digital meter must be known. Our investigation found that the self-balancing bridge type of digital capacitance instruments were superior to the RC time constant digital meters. The digital capacitance meter must apply a waveform to the cell which has no dc component. Otherwise drift results, especially for polar solvents.
