Cross-Proportions: A Conceptual Method for Developing Quantitative Problem-Solving Skills
Elzbieta Cook and Robert L. CookJournal of Chemical Education2005 82 (8), 1187Cross-Proportions: A Conceptual Method for Developing Quantitative Problem-Solving Skills
Elzbieta Cook and Robert L. CookJournal of Chemical Education2005 82 (8), 1187This paper focuses attention on the cross-proportion (C-P) method of mathematical problem solving, which was once widely used in chemical calculations. We propose that this method regain currency as an alternative to the dimensional analysis (DA) method, ...

Evaluating Students' Conceptual Understanding of Balanced Equations and Stoichiometric Ratios Using a Particulate Drawing
Michael J. SangerJournal of Chemical Education2005 82 (1), 131Evaluating Students' Conceptual Understanding of Balanced Equations and Stoichiometric Ratios Using a Particulate Drawing
Michael J. SangerJournal of Chemical Education2005 82 (1), 131A total of 156 students were asked to provide free-response balanced chemical equations for a classic multiple-choice particulate-drawing question first used by Nurrenbern and Pickering. The balanced equations and the number of students providing each ...

The Mole, the Periodic Table, and Quantum Numbers: An Introductory Trio
Raymond S. Ochs , Mali YinJournal of Chemical Education2001 78 (10), 1345The Mole, the Periodic Table, and Quantum Numbers: An Introductory Trio
Raymond S. Ochs , Mali YinJournal of Chemical Education2001 78 (10), 1345We suggest that three foundational ideas be presented at the start of an introductory chemistry course: the mole, the periodic table, and quantum numbers. Moreover, it is critical that nonessential detail be suppressed in order to provide a first-pass ...
