Abstract

A novel method based on the catalytic effect of micelles exerted by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB), respectively, on the indicator reaction between H2O2 and bromopyrogallol red (BPR), a triphenylmethane dye, to determine the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of CTAB and CPB.

Juan P. Marcolongo and Martín Mirenda
      Journal of Chemical Education2011 88 (5), 629-633

An undergraduate laboratory experiment is presented that allows a thermodynamic characterization of micelle formation of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous solutions. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the degree of micelle ionization (α) ...

      Langmuir2010 26 (12), 10271-10276

We report our findings on the important role of bromide ions in the seeding growth process of Au nanorods. The seed-mediated process constitutes a well-developed method for synthesizing gold nanorods in high yield, which is facilitated by a micelle-...

    • Surfactant Adsorption: A Revised Physical Chemistry Lab

Marc R. Bresler and John P. Hagen
      Journal of Chemical Education2008 85 (2), 269

Many physical chemistry lab courses include an experiment in which students measure surface tension as a function of surfactant concentration. In the traditional experiment, the data are fit to the Gibbs isotherm to determine the molar area for the ...
