Abstract
The experiment requires a voltmeter capable of recording millivolts (or a good pH meter) and inexpensive chemicals. It allows students to check the validity of the Nernst equation and compare their experimental Kform values to reported ones.

Lisa P. Nestor , Mauri A. Ditzler , Kenneth V. Mills , Richard S. Herrick and Louise W. Guilmette , Heather ShaferJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (8), 1116Within the framework of a laboratory-focused, guided-inquiry pedagogy, students discover the Nernst equation, the spontaneity of galvanic cells, concentration cells, and the use of electrochemical data to calculate equilibrium constants. The laboratory ...

Redox Titration of Ferricyanide to Ferrocyanide with Ascorbic Acid: Illustrating the Nernst Equation and Beer–Lambert Law

Tina H. Huang , Gail Salter , Sarah L. Kahn and Yvonne M. GindtJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (9), 1461We have developed a simple, resilient experiment that illustrates the Nernst equation and Beer–Lambert law for our second-semester general chemistry students. In the experiment, the students monitor the reduction of ferricyanide ion, [Fe(CN)6]3-, to ...

C. M. Sánchez-Sánchez , E. Expósito , A. Frías-Ferrer , J. González-García , V. Montiel and A. AldazJournal of Chemical Education2004 81 (5), 698An experiment is described that approximates the industrial chlor–alkali process using a membrane cell. The experiments allows students to assimilate the basic theoretical concepts of applied electrochemistry (charge and mass balances, charge and mass ...

The Solubility Product of PbCl2 from Electrochemical Measurements
Jimmy S. Hwang and Ghassan A. OweimreenJournal of Chemical Education2003 80 (9), 1051The Solubility Product of PbCl2 from Electrochemical Measurements
Jimmy S. Hwang and Ghassan A. OweimreenJournal of Chemical Education2003 80 (9), 1051A new experiment suited for an undergraduate physical chemistry laboratory is presented. The students obtain the solubility product, Ksp, of PbCl2 at various temperatures from practically simultaneous emf measurements on two electrochemical cells. One ...

Environmental Redox Potential and Redox Capacity Concepts Using a Simple Polarographic Experiment
Alejandro PidelloJournal of Chemical Education2003 80 (1), 68Environmental Redox Potential and Redox Capacity Concepts Using a Simple Polarographic Experiment
Alejandro PidelloJournal of Chemical Education2003 80 (1), 68The redox status of a system may be analyzed in terms of the redox potential (redox intensity component) and the size of the pool of electrons able to be transferred (redox capacity component). In single chemical systems, both terms are thermodynamically ...
