Abstract
An experimental apparatus and protocol for the selective flotation of dissolved ions suitable for use in undergraduate laboratories is described. The system may be used to illustrate the application of ion-exchange equilibria, kinetics, and surface chemistry to real-life problems in areas as diverse as environmental chemistry and mineral processing. Rather than describing a particular experiment in detail, we have described the equipment used and outlined the various ways in which it might be applied at a range of undergraduate levels to make the connection between fundamental chemical understanding and a variety of applied problems.

Gonzalo Guirado and José A. AyllónJournal of Chemical Education2011 88 (5), 624-628The study of adsorption phenomenon is one of the most relevant and traditional physical chemistry experiments performed by chemistry undergraduate students in laboratory courses. In this article, we describe an easy, inexpensive, and straightforward way ...

Richard A. VendittiJournal of Chemical Education2004 81 (5), 693Flotation de-inking technology is used in the paper recycling process to preferentially remove hydrophobic contaminants, such as inks and toners from a slurry of fibers in water. In the process fine air bubbles are introduced into the suspension and the ...
