Abstract
There are more relationships among the elements than those by group or period. This paper provides an overview of the different patterns, including the diagonal relationship, the (n) group and (n + 10) group similarities, the "knight's move" relationship, the early actinoid relationship, and compounds that imitate elements. By incorporating these relationships, descriptive inorganic chemistry can be taught in a more organized and interesting manner.

A New Method for Studying the Periodic System Based on a Kohonen Neural Network
David Zhekai ChenJournal of Chemical Education2010 87 (4), 433-434A New Method for Studying the Periodic System Based on a Kohonen Neural Network
David Zhekai ChenJournal of Chemical Education2010 87 (4), 433-434A new method for studying the periodic system is described based on the combination of a Kohonen neural network and a set of chemical and physical properties. The classification results are directly shown in a two-dimensional map and easy to interpret. ...

Mistake of Having Students Be Mendeleev for Just a Day
Brett CriswellJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (7), 1140Mistake of Having Students Be Mendeleev for Just a Day
Brett CriswellJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (7), 1140The development of a deep conceptual understanding of the periodic table—its structure, relationships, and utility—is one of the key objectives in an introductory chemistry course. However, there is a difference between recognizing that objective and ...

Syntheses and Structures of Two Low-Dimensional Beryllium Phosphate Compounds: [C5H14N2]2[Be3(HPO4)5]·H2O and [C6H18N2]0.5[Be2(PO4)(HPO4)OH]·0.5H2O

Min Guo, Jihong Yu, Jiyang Li, Yi Li, and Ruren XuInorganic Chemistry2006 45 (8), 3281-3286The first two low-dimensional beryllium phosphates, [C5H14N2]2[Be3(HPO4)5]·H2O (BePO-CJ29) and [C6H18N2]0.5[Be2(PO4)(HPO4)OH]·0.5H2O (BePO-CJ30), have been successfully synthesized under mild hydrothermal/solvothermal conditions. BePO-CJ29 is built up ...

Guillermo Restrepo, Héber Mesa, Eugenio J. Llanos, and José L. VillavecesJournal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences2004 44 (1), 68-75We carried out a topological study of the Space of Chemical Elements, SCE, based on a clustering analysis of 72 elements, each one defined by a vector of 31 properties. We looked for neighborhoods, boundaries, and other topological properties of the SCE. ...
