Abstract
A mechanism consisting of several elementary steps may not have a unique stoichiometry. Even if one exists, a linear combination of the steps will not in general lead to a correct formulation of the overall stoichiometry. We consider the time dependence of stoichiometry and show how it can be obtained. A linear combination of the rate expressions for the steps, together with the use of the steady-state assumption for the concentration of reactive intermediates, will lead to an unambiguous expression for the time-dependent stoichiometry of the system.

Ronald W. Missen , William R. SmithJournal of Chemical Education2003 80 (7), 833A proposed reaction mechanism in chemical kinetics contains implications for mass-conservation equations (stoichiometry) governing the reacting system. The only information required to determine the number and a particular set of these equations is the ...

Sidney Toby and Irwin TobiasJournal of Chemical Education2003 80 (5), 520What Is the Overall Stoichiometry of a Complex Reaction?
Sidney Toby and Irwin TobiasJournal of Chemical Education2003 80 (5), 520The overall stoichiometry of a reaction having a multistep mechanismcan be derived using methods based on either of the following twoapproaches: elemental-balance or extent of reaction. The extent ofreaction method (ξ method) has been used for many years. ...
