Quantifying Molecular Character

Abstract

Wells and Jensen's classification of substances according to structure type is quantified, enabling substances having an intermediate structure to be classified precisely. Jensen's concept of the "degree of nonmolecularity" of a substance and the opposite quality, degree of molecular character, are also quantified. Molecular character is combined with electrical character to produce a new classification of substances. This is similar to, but more securely based than, classifications involving bond type and can be used to introduce the latter.
