Abstract
This three-week project involves isolating and purifying a natural product and determining its structure. trans-Anethole is isolated from anise seeds by steam distillation and liquid-liquid extraction. The crude product is analyzed by thin-layer chromatography and purified by flash chromatography. A variety of one- and two-dimensional NMR methods, along with infrared spectroscopy, are used to elucidate the structure. The one-dimensional NMR methods are proton homonuclear decoupling, Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer (DEPT), and Nuclear Overhauser Effect (NOE) difference spectroscopy. The two-dimensional NMR methods are proton-proton COrrelated SpectroscopY (COSY) and HETeronuclear CORrelated spectroscopy (HETCOR). Finally, the proton and carbon-13 NMR spectra are assigned.

Stephen K. O’Shea, Daniel D. Von Riesen, and Lauren L. RossiJournal of Chemical Education2012 Article ASAPNatural product isolation and analysis provide an opportunity to present a variety of experimental techniques to undergraduate students in introductory organic chemistry. Eugenol, anethole, and carvone were extracted from six common spices using steam-...

T. Grove , D. DiLella and E. VolkerJournal of Chemical Education2006 83 (7), 1055Stereospecific synthesis of a geometrical isomer is not a common topic for the introductory organic chemistry laboratory. We have developed and tested an experiment for the synthesis of (Z) and (E) isomers that has been performed successfully by ...

Monoterpene Unknowns Identified Using IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, COSY, and HETCOR
Lisa T. AltyJournal of Chemical Education2005 82 (9), 1387Monoterpene Unknowns Identified Using IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, COSY, and HETCOR
Lisa T. AltyJournal of Chemical Education2005 82 (9), 1387This set of NMR experiments can be a capstone experience for a spectroscopy or advanced laboratory course following organic chemistry. Students are given a monoterpene to identify using IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and DEPT data. Once the unknown is identified, ...

Jackie M. Rummey and Mary C. BoyceJournal of Chemical Education2004 81 (5), 762Traditional methods of teaching structural elucidation for NMR spectrometry have mimicked spectroscopists' use of peak shift tables and coupling constants. The approach described in this article includes NMR spectral simulation and so parallels ...

Ruth E. Stark , Holly C. GaedeJournal of Chemical Education2001 78 (9), 1248A laboratory project is described that builds upon the NMR experience undergraduates receive in organic chemistry with a battery of NMR experiments that investigate egg phosphatidylcholine (egg PC). This material, often labeled in health food stores as ...
