Abstract
This article is an introduction to a set of papers presented at the Piaget: Constructivism and Beyond symposium held at the 1998 Spring ACS Meeting in Dallas, TX, and at the 16th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education in Ann Arbor, MI. It revisits the basics of the theory introduced to the chemical education community by J. D. Herron in a 1975 JCE article (). Piagetian theory has influenced our perspective on learning and learners during these 25 years, and it continues to be a significant part of the foundation of emerging theories about personal construction of knowledge and learning.

Comparing Two Tests of Formal Reasoning in a College Chemistry Context
Bo Jiang, Xiaoying Xu, Alicia Garcia, and Jennifer E. LewisJournal of Chemical Education2010 87 (12), 1430-1437Comparing Two Tests of Formal Reasoning in a College Chemistry Context
Bo Jiang, Xiaoying Xu, Alicia Garcia, and Jennifer E. LewisJournal of Chemical Education2010 87 (12), 1430-1437The Test of Logical Thinking (TOLT) and the Group Assessment of Logical Thinking (GALT) are two of the instruments most widely used by science educators and researchers to measure students’ formal reasoning abilities. Based on Piaget’s cognitive ...

Qualitative Research Designs in Chemistry Education Research
Stacey Lowery Bretz2008 976 (), 79-99Qualitative Research Designs in Chemistry Education Research
Stacey Lowery Bretz2008 976 (), 79-99Qualitative research methodologies are uniquely suited to exploring the mechanisms of teaching and learning chemistry. This chapter examines the issue of the fit between research question and research design, as well as provides an overview of the ...

The Particulate Nature of Matter: An Example of How Theory-Based Research Can Impact the Field
Vickie M. Williamson2008 976 (), 67-78The Particulate Nature of Matter: An Example of How Theory-Based Research Can Impact the Field
Vickie M. Williamson2008 976 (), 67-78The Particulate Nature of Matter is vital to understanding chemistry. Chemists explain phemonena in terms of particle behavior. Several chemical education research studies have helped expand the theory of how students learn about particle behavior. Early ...

Using Inferential Statistics to Answer Quantitative Chemical Education Research Questions
Michael J. Sanger2008 976 (), 101-133Using Inferential Statistics to Answer Quantitative Chemical Education Research Questions
Michael J. Sanger2008 976 (), 101-133While many chemists value quantitative, statistical research more than other chemical education research involving less mathematical and more qualitative methodologies, few are comfortable performing or evaluating this kind of research. This chapter ...

Nathaniel Grove and Stacey Lowery BretzJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (9), 1524CHEMX: An Instrument To Assess Students' Cognitive Expectations for Learning Chemistry
Nathaniel Grove and Stacey Lowery BretzJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (9), 1524Many researchers have investigated the effects of students' prior knowledge upon learning chemistry, for example, the tenacity of alternative conceptions. Knowledge about learning also shapes students' learning of chemistry. This research describes the ...
