Abstract

A molecular modeling and computational chemistry (MMandCC) facility for undergraduate instruction and research at Humboldt State University is described. Three adjacent and networked rooms house an instructional laboratory, a mini-laboratory available to students 24/7, and a research facility for advanced students and faculty. This facility complex has allowed the introduction of MMandCC throughout the chemistry curriculum, with tailored experiments in general, organic, and inorganic courses, as well as a new "Molecular Modeling" course and a greatly improved "Symbolic Computation in the Sciences" offering. Undergraduate research projects (solely computational in focus as well as those in which computations support experimental studies) have greatly increased in number, and undergraduate students are beginning research projects earlier in their college careers because of the computers and software made available by this project.
