Abstract
Fluorescence quantum yields and luminescence spectra for solid samples are presented and interpreted. Re-absorption of the emitted light is very important in these systems causing a decrease in the observed luminescence quantum yield as well as distortions in emission spectra (usually a shift to longer wavelengths). These processes affect far more the emission from thick layers than from thin layers of scattering materials. Quantitative corrections due to light re-absorption and re-emission processes are introduced. This manuscript summarizes the practical cautions to be taken into account to avoid misunderstanding or false results when dealing with luminescence data in the presence of light scattering.
