Abstract
129Xe NMR spectroscopy of xenon physisorbed in commercially available zeolite NaY is introduced as an experiment suitable for the inorganic chemistry laboratory in the senior year. The integration of concepts from inorganic and physical chemistry (ideal gas law, gas adsorption, solid state structure, porous materials, NMR spectroscopy) make this experiment also suitable for an integrated laboratory approach. The chemical shift of 129Xe at different loadings in the α-cages of zeolite NaY is used to derive the intrinsic chemical shift by extrapolation to zero loading.

Jason Cooke and Eric J. HendersonJournal of Chemical Education2009 86 (5), 606Experiments are presented that demonstrate the size-exclusion properties of zeolites and reveal the reason for naming zeolites "molecular sieves". If an IR spectrometer is available, the adsorption or exclusion of alcohols of varying sizes from ...

Hellmut Eckert and Karin Meise-Gresch , Stanley E. Anderson and David SaikiJournal of Chemical Education2004 81 (7), 1034The solid state 31P NMR wideline spectra of a series of student-prepared sodium phosphate glasses can easily be measured using a standard multinuclear FTNMR spectrometer available in many chemistry departments. The observed spectra can be simulated by ...
