Abstract
Implementation of student active-learning methods (SAL), such as ConcepTests, appears to be on the rise in the college classroom. Most instructors have used ConcepTests in larger classes (100-300 students) as a way to engage the students and elicit feedback. This paper reports on some of the special considerations that were necessary when ConcepTests were used in a smaller-sized class (15 students). It was determined that the use of ConcepTests was a great way to actively engage students, despite the small class size. Not only were the usual benefits of student active learning obtained, there were other advantages that arose as a result of the more intimate class size.

Brett CriswellJournal of Chemical Education2006 83 (4), 574The call to present chemistry concepts through hands-on, inquiry-based activities has been sounded by countless individuals. While research seems to indicate that this is the most effective way to teach the subject matter, there are certain topics within ...

Richard J. Plano , Sidney TobyJournal of Chemical Education2004 81 (2), 180Multiple-choice questions are usually employed in testing in large science courses for speed, accuracy, and fairness in grading. A significant disadvantage is that students are often presented with an unrealistic choice of answers that may make it ...
