Abstract
The experiment introduces students to the chemistry of metals that form compounds with more than one oxidation state. Cu(I) is an example of an intermediate oxidation state that can undergo disproportionation or reproportionation reactions depending on the solvent and background electrolyte. A simple experiment to demonstrate the reproportionation of copper(I) from the reaction between copper metal and copper(II) in acidic aqueous solution containing an excess of chlorides is presented. The reaction is fast enough to complete the entire experiment within an hour.

BercawOrganometallics2007 26 (1), 167-172In the oxidation of methane by a mixture of platinum(II) and platinum(IV) salts in aqueous soution, [PtII(CH3)Cl3]2- is oxidized by Na2[PtIVCl6] competitively with protonation. To find a suitable, less expensive oxidant, [PtII(CH3)Cl3]2- was generated ...

SayreChemical Research in Toxicology2007 20 (1), 129-139An assessment of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH)-detectable protein-based carbonyls is one of the most common assays used to quantify oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we compared, for the lipid-binding protein -lactoglobulin, the ...
