Abstract
A simple procedure for the syntheses of two luminescent compounds, which are widely used in organic light-emitting diodes, is presented. This experiment is suitable for an undergraduate inorganic laboratory. The two compounds are a main group coordination compound AlIIIq3, where q is 8-hydroxyquinolinolato, and a lanthanide coordination compound EuIII(tta)3(phen), where tta is thenoyltrifluoroacetonato and phen is 1,10-phenanthroline. These compounds demonstrate two types of luminescence, ligand-centered emission in AlIIIq3 and ligand-enhanced π to π transitions in EuIII(tta)3(phen). Furthermore, this experiment demonstrates the role of chelating ligands in the formation of complexes and luminescence.
