Abstract
This NSF Highlights communication reports on the incorporation of computational chemistry into the physical chemistry curriculum resulting from workstations and software funded by an NSF ILI award. The new course and computational experiments are described. Structural changes made to more effectively teach computational chemistry in the context of the course are discussed.

Naomi C. Pernicone, Jacob B. Geri, and John T. YorkJournal of Chemical Education2011 Article ASAPIn this exercise, students apply a combination of techniques to investigate the impact of metal identity and ligand field strength on the spin states of three d5 transition-metal complexes: Fe(acac)3, K3[Fe(CN)6], and Ru(acac)3, where acac– is ...

Raman Spectroscopy as the Method of Detection for Constructing a Binary Liquid–Vapor Phase Diagram

Debra J. Scardino, Austin A. Howard, Matthew D. McDowell, and Nathan I. HammerJournal of Chemical Education2011 Article ASAPThe physical chemistry laboratory is sometimes constrained to one semester, resulting in pedagogical deficiencies for the students taking the course. The use of a multidimensional laboratory exercise offers students the opportunity to encounter multiple ...

Juan C. Paniagua , Fernando Mota , Albert Solé and Eudald VilasecaJournal of Chemical Education2008 85 (9), 1288This article describes our experience with a short quantum chemistry laboratory in which the required software is contained on an auto-starting CD (live CD). The students use it at the university's computer-room to get acquainted with it. Then the CD is ...

Introducing the Practical Aspects of Computational Chemistry to Undergraduate Chemistry Students
Jason K. PearsonJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (8), 1323Introducing the Practical Aspects of Computational Chemistry to Undergraduate Chemistry Students
Jason K. PearsonJournal of Chemical Education2007 84 (8), 1323Educating early undergraduate-level students in theoretical and computational chemistry is difficult for a variety of reasons. Often students are left underexposed to the discipline because of a hesitation to add to an already full course syllabus or ...
