Abstract

An experiment is described that approximates the industrial chlor–alkali process using a membrane cell. The experiments allows students to assimilate the basic theoretical concepts of applied electrochemistry (charge and mass balances, charge and mass transport processes, Faraday's laws, etc.) and to familiarize themselves with figures of merit such as current efficiency, energy consumption, and area time yield.
