Abstract

A national survey of approximately 570 mainly undergraduate institutions has shown that only a few offer specific courses on the history of chemistry. Considerably more offer the history of science, usually within other departments such as a Department of History. The inclusion of some history within regular chemistry courses is quite common, with coverage varying from slight to extensive. While a lack of time prohibits most modern chemical curricula from including a specific history of chemistry course, about five institutions were studying or planning such an addition.
