Abstract
Cisplatin is currently one of the most widely used anticancer drugs in the world. The unlikely events surrounding the discovery of its anticancer activity, subsequent introduction into the clinic, and the continuing research into platinum compounds is the subject of this review. Cisplatin and related platinum compounds remain the focus of extensive research. Reliable methods for the synthesis of such compounds have been developed and it has been established that they exert their anticancer activity through interaction with DNA. The search continues for a platinum drug to improve upon the clinical performance of cisplatin. Several have entered clinical trials but have been abandoned for a variety of reasons. However, preliminary results on novel compounds have been particularly promising.

Anthony J. Di Pasqua, Charles Hong, Mona Y Wu, Erin McCracken, Xiantao Wang, Lixin Mi and Fung-Lung ChungChemical Research in Toxicology2010 23 (8), 1307-1309We show that naturally occurring isothiocyanates (ITCs) sensitize human non-small cell lung cancer cells to cisplatin. Moreover, the structure of the ITC side chain moiety is important for sensitization. In NCI-H596 cells, 20 μM benzyl isothiocyanate (...

Confirming the 3D Solution Structure of a Short Double-Stranded DNA Sequence Using NMR Spectroscopy
Rasha A. Ruhayel and Susan J. Berners-PriceJournal of Chemical Education2010 87 (7), 732-734Confirming the 3D Solution Structure of a Short Double-Stranded DNA Sequence Using NMR Spectroscopy
Rasha A. Ruhayel and Susan J. Berners-PriceJournal of Chemical Education2010 87 (7), 732-7342D 1H NOESY NMR spectroscopy is routinely used to give information on the closeness of hydrogen atoms through space. This work is based on a 2D 1H NOESY NMR spectrum of a 12 base-pair DNA duplex. This 6-h laboratory workshop aims to provide advanced-level ...
