The Concept of Resonance

Abstract

This article begins by responding to a recent suggestion that "resonance", as in valence bond theory, should be relabeled "delocalization". It is shown that these are different concepts, and the meaning of resonance in modern valence bond theory is discussed. An example of physically resonating states is given.
