The Change in Publication Rates at Undergraduate Institutions during the Last Three Decades

Abstract
Publication rates for chemistry faculty at 55 predominantly undergraduate institutions were ascertained from the number of publications and presentations produced over the past three decades. Comparison of the publications for the last decade with those reported for the earlier decades showed that the majority of institutions surveyed have experienced an increase in productivity per faculty member. This increase in productivity can be juxtaposed to a preliminary finding by NSF of a slowed growth in publications from U.S. research institutions. Based upon the percentage of publications that have the first or reprint author as the institutional author, it appears that much of the research over the last decade for most institutions included in this study is done on campus, presumably with students, and that "undergraduate" research involves students perhaps slightly more so at the more prolific institutions. A survey of conference abstracts per year per faculty member also indicates that the more productive institutions are in producing papers, the less significance they place on conference presentations.
