Enhanced Objects in ACS Web Editions

What are “enhanced objects”?

The ACS is interested in exploring various Web-based technologies that could enhance the way information in a research article is conveyed. Selected papers in the Web Edition may contain enhanced objects. These objects, while not essential to the understanding of the science, should help to complement a reader's understanding of the research being reported. The types of objects suitable for this form of publication should be viewable with commonly available plug-ins or helper applications. Examples include color figures, animations, and chemical structures within the article posted on the Internet. With the appropriate plug-ins (e.g., Chime) or helper applications (e.g., WebLab Viewer, RasMol), you can view and manipulate these objects within the HTML file itself or in a separate window.

What does the “” mean?

We have created two graphics for our Web Editions to highlight articles that contain enhanced objects. A will be placed in the article's listing in the ASAP Table of Contents, the Online Edition's Table of Contents, and at the beginning of the article. An animated version, , will be imbedded within the article to highlight the description of a link to the actual enhanced objects. (In the print editions, a will appear in these locations.)
