COMPANY RESULTS: Profits crept up as headcount went down

Sales and income recovery slowed in 1996, but profit margin still rose


Note: Based on results of 12 leading Japanese chemical companies: Asahi Chemical, Dainippon Ink & Chemicals, Hitachi Chemical, MItsubishi Chemical, Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals, Sekisui Chemical, Showa Denko, Sumitomo Chemical, Takeda Chemical Industries, Teijin, Toray Industries, and Ube Industries. The fiscal year for most, but not all, of these companies ends March 31. Monetary statistics for all years converted from yen to U.S. dollars on the basis of the 1996 average exchange rate of $1.00 = 108.78 yen.
