The propagation of infectious prion protein occurs via conversion of normal prion protein (PrP^c, left) to a disease-causing form (PrP^Sc, right). In the refolding process, some of the -helical regions (purple coils) in PrP^c unfold, forming an extended ß-sheet region (flat blue arrows).
