Using aqueous acidic and quiescent surfactant-silicate systems, the University of Toronto's Ozin and Hong Yang have prepared a variety of curved silica objects up to 100 µm in size, having micrometer-scale surface patterns and nanometer-scale pores. Another such object is shown on the cover (lower right). These complex shapes are reminiscent of those formed by living organisms.
