
James C. Ogbonna is an associate professor in the
Institute of Applied Biochemistry, University of Tsukuba (Tsukuba,
Ibaraki 305, Japan; fax +81-298-53-4605). He received an M.S. degree in
engineering from Yamanashi University and a Ph.D. in applied
biochemistry from the University of Tsukuba. His current research
interests include photobioreactor design and scale-up; system
development for CO2 fixation, production of useful
metabolites, and waste

Hideo Tanaka is a professor and dean of the doctoral program in Agricultural Sciences, University of Tsukuba (fax +81-298-53-4577). He has a Ph.D. in engineering from Osaka University. He is one of the pioneer researchers in plant cell cultivation, and other research interests include cell immobilization, mixed cell culture systems, and photosynthetic cell cultivation. In collaboration with Meiji Seika Kaisha Ltd., he successfully scaled upbialaphos production to 300 tons, for which they received an academic award from the Society for Fermentation and Bioengineering Japan.
